The Ortho Evra® birth control patch can increase your risk of heart attacks and stroke. This page includes information about causes and symptoms of these life-threatening medical conditions.
All forms of combination hormonal contraceptives have been shown to increase a women’s risk of having a heart attack or stroke. The reason is that they all contribute to heightened estrogen levels in the body, which can lead to a number of clotting problems. However, not all forms of combination hormonal contraceptives are equally dangerous.
In November 2005, the FDA changed the labeling of Ortho Evra® to reveal that it exposes women to 60 percent more estrogen than a typical birth control pill. Before this warning was issued, the attorneys at Douglas & London were already aware that the Patch was contributing to a much higher rate of serious injuries than typical birth control pills. However, a warning was not issued about the heightened estrogen levels caused by the Patch until after many women had already experienced tragic side effects.
If you or a loved one was an Ortho Evra® birth control patch user who experienced a heart attack or stroke prior to the addition of the new Ortho Evra® warning label, contact Douglas & London for legal assistance.
A heart attack, also known as a myocardial infarction (MI), occurs when a blood clot blocks a coronary artery, obstructing blood flow to the heart muscle. When the heart is completely deprived of blood, cells in the heart muscle begin to die. This results in permanent damage to the heart and can cause death.
The pain and other symptoms caused by a heart attack will usually not go away with rest. If you recognize the early signs of a heart attack, it is imperative that you seek emergency medical attention immediately. Failing to do so can result in death.
If you or a loved one experienced a heart attack that may have been related to use of the Patch, contact Douglas & London. Our Ortho Evra® birth control patch attorneys are dedicated to helping victims of heart attacks caused by the Patch.
A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is disrupted by a blockage or bleeding of a blood vessel. The areas of the brain that are affected by a stroke can become damaged in minutes.
The effects of a stroke can vary greatly, depending on which brain cells are damaged, how much of the brain is affected, and how quickly blood flow returns to the area.
Ortho Evra® birth control patch users who display any of the above stroke symptoms require immediate medical attention in order to help limit potential damage.
If you or a loved one is an Ortho Evra® birth control patch user who displayed stroke symptoms while using the patch, please contact Douglas & London, P.C., for legal representation.
