Since the patch was made available for consumer use, it has become associated with a variety of health risks. Some of the most serious birth control patch risks include:
In addition to these serious complications, there are a number of other side effects linked to use of Ortho Evra®.
Prior to adding a new warning to the patch in November 2005, the makers of the birth control patch claimed that the rate of serious complications from Ortho Evra® was the same as the rate of serious complications from birth control pills. However, although the hormones used in both forms of birth control are similar, the method of administration is not. It has now been established that women who use the patch are exposed to 60 percent more estrogen than women who take a typical birth control pill containing 35 micrograms of estrogen. This means that birth control patch users are exposed to much higher levels of estrogen and thus may have a much higher degree of risk associated with contraceptive use.
If you experienced serious patch-related complications or side effects prior to the addition of the new Ortho Evra® warning label, contact Douglas & London so we can help you pursue compensation for your injuries.
Since filing the first nationwide class action lawsuit against the manufacturers of Ortho Evra®, the attorneys at Douglas & London have persistently investigated birth control patch risks. This review has revealed some concerning data, including 9,116 reports to the FDA of adverse reactions to the patch over a 17-month period. Reports also show that the deaths of at least seventeen young American women over the past two years may be related to Ortho Evra® use.
